Questions

What people ask us

Is it safe to walk into a flooded basement?

Not always. Say you come home and see water over the floor. Stay out until the power is off at the panel, and only if the panel is dry and you can reach it safely. Water and electricity can be deadly. Floodwater may also carry germs. If you are unsure, stay upstairs and call a local provider to check the space first.

What can I safely do myself after a leak?

Small, clean leaks are often fine to handle. Stop the water source, move furniture and rugs, mop up puddles, and run fans. That is a safe first step. Mop or call: if the water is gray, dark, or has soaked walls, carpet pads or insulation, a provider has the tools to dry it properly.

When is DIY not enough for water damage?

Mops and box fans cannot reach water inside walls or under flooring. DIY falls short when water has sat for more than a day or two, covers a large area, came from a sewer or storm, or leaves a musty smell. Those jobs need extraction pumps, meters and drying equipment. A provider in our network can assess it.

How much does water damage restoration cost?

Costs vary a lot by job. In the U.S., a small, contained cleanup may run a few hundred dollars, while larger jobs with extraction, structural drying and repairs can reach several thousand or more. Size, water type and materials all matter. Request an estimate and ask providers for a written quote that lists each step.

Will my homeowners insurance cover water damage?

It depends on your policy and the cause. Some policies may cover sudden damage, such as a burst pipe, while flooding or slow leaks are often treated differently. Check your policy or ask your insurer. Providers can often help document the damage with notes and photos, which can make a claim easier to explain.

How soon can mold start to grow?

Mold can begin to grow within a day or two in damp, warm spots, and humid summers speed it up. Dry the area quickly and keep air moving. If you see dark spots or smell something musty, avoid scrubbing large patches yourself. A provider can check hidden moisture and advise next steps.

Why do the walls and floors need structural drying?

A floor can look dry while water stays in the subfloor, studs or insulation. That hidden moisture can lead to warping, odor and mold. Providers use moisture meters, air movers and dehumidifiers to dry materials fully. The goal is dry before rebuild, so repairs are not covered up while damp.

How can I prevent basement flooding and pipe leaks?

Test your sump pump each spring and consider a battery backup. Clear gutters, point downspouts away from the house, and seal visible cracks. In cold weather, insulate exposed pipes so deep frost does not burst them. Check hoses and appliance lines yearly. Small habits now can spare a busy household a big mess later.
